May 29th...Practice

Postby four » Fri May 21, 2010 10:39 am

So, here we are about to start yet another season with questions yet again about players, pitching, and defense. I'm a little out of the loop with which players are to be named later, and who is going to be our starter, but as an infielder, I really want to tighten things up in the infield. I believe anyone who is going to pitch next (I have a strong urge to step up in that position if you all will back me up) is not going to have the same effect on the other teams that Rob had, so we're probably going to have to pitch to contact and let the defense do the deeds.

May 29th should be our day to get on a field and work on some fundamentals in the infield like double plays (a lot of missed opportunities there), catcher throw downs (has to be quicker and more accurate), and PFP's (whomever is going to pitch is going to have to know how to be a fielder after they throw the ball).

Of course we'll hit, we're a hitting team, but perhaps we're going to have to prioritize on defense. What do you all think?

I agree are defense needs to be stronger with the absence of Rob. Practice on Sat. works for me if we do it in the morning. One thing though, is I really want to work on things, not hit 5 groundballs to each guy in the infield and a couple of flyballs to the outfield and call that a defensive practice. We really need to do something different, and I'll run the practice if everyone is on board. But its not going to be fun, but will prepare us for game-like situations. I understand if you just want to hit, I'm the same way but we do need to work on other things. What do you gus think?

I would love to get dirty and take some balls off the chin (besides Peter's on date night) on Saturday but my brother is in town and we are playing golf at 9am. If Sunday morning works better for you guys I will be available. Hungover, but available. Not sure I really need the practice since one ball a year gets hit my way and I have gotten pretty good at making excuses for missing that ground ball anyways. Just remember when you are throwing to first to get em in the dirt or get em high. Whatever you do, please don't hit me in the glove or aim for my chest. Those throws confuse me. :P

My schedule is always opposite of all of yours, it's weird. I'll try to work things out for Sunday.

I think it would be a great idea for Derek to take over practice and run us into shape. Our defense has always been decent, but we have potential to be great. And, the hard thing about defense practice, everyone needs to be there--even outfielders. We do a great job about going to the cages and hitting on our own if need be, but defense requires everyone. This is what makes it difficult, however, necessary.

Sure we are a recreational team and this is a recreational league, but I hope that all of us are on board to work on some fundamentals and tighten up some loose crews.

Anyway, I hope I can get my shifts at the restaurant moved around if you all want practice on Sunday, I really want to be there. I wish I could have made the party at Doug's house last week, but I couldn't get my shift covered, so I missed out. Sounded like it was fun.

Show up with your gear, mitts, gloves, and a cooperative attitude. Derek runs the show for this practice.

Ya, I got a tone from Doc that he was going to be hitting balls at us with a fungo from 5 feet away. The only situations the outfield will likely work on is a hard hit ball in the gap, that I'll of course have to go get and heave in.

I think it would be a great idea for Derek to take over practice and run us into shape.

Is this 'run' literally? Anytime I mention getting faster or working on running people get real quiet and hide. I'll show up under these conditions, and I love to play ball and practice:

1--We begin practice with some basic running lessons/strategies. I can't make you fast, but can make you faster.

2--We take a FULL infield/outfield. This is where Derek can give situational advice and work on stuff like: Runner on 1st trying to score on a ball down the 3rd base line, that either get's cut home or cut to get runner at second.

3--Hitting, with stations. Maybe soft toss against a fence and wiffle ball toss.

4--Discussion of at least basic strategy to be used this summer. Ok, I just spell it out. S-I-G-N-S and how not using them is dumb, and cost us runs if not games.

IF we don't do these things, all we got at the end of the day is a waste of time like every practice we've done. So we can do one of two things. 1) Cry and wine that we don't have our pitcher and go 3-7 or 2) We MAN up, and do what we need to and get into the playoff's. We need people to step up each week, many/all of us will likely miss games over the summer. Do It Together!

A couple of things:

I'll show up under these conditions
What is this an ultimatum? Ha

Practice is not going to work with only 7 people. The more people the better off we'll be and the better practice we'll have.

Sunday the earlier the better for me. Also there could be memorial day tournys at G.H. I'm heading to the Padres and the game is at 1:00

Finally, I'm the 1000 Post bitches

I have my shifts switched all around and I am pumped for Sunday. The earlier the better for me as well. I'm thinking 9 AM.

Hi all,

I will not be at the softball or baseball game this week due to signing paperwork and moving into our new house in Allied Gardens.
